It is hard to believe that 2019 is close to an end. It seems like it was just yesterday the year started.
On a personal note, this year has been hard. Ruby and I had a great loss, along with lots of family and friends, when a young man that we helped raise since he was in 6th grade passed away. That along with our parents failing health, as a family we refocused our priorities.
As a company, we decided we got too big and too stretched out. I felt that we were neglecting the customers that helped us remain in existence for over 100 years.
To fix this, we did 2 things:
- We spun off our equipment business to a company called Datamax. This was the only company we could find that could handle the vast territory and provide excellent service.
- We also spun off our Terrell division to OCOP Express. Being 2 ½ hours away was too far for us to be effective. Being in the DFW area, they have improved on what we started when we purchased our TOP office. Since July 1 of this year, the Texarkana and Longview store have started a deliberate focus on our customers. To start this off, we have initiated several things in 2019 and we are continuing them in 2020:
- We will change Free Sample Friday to Freebie Friday. This program is when we give gifts/samples to customers.
- We started Wacky Wednesday this year, and it has been very successful. This program is when we give items to customers that order.
- We added a new position here. The Customer Care Advocate will be making sure our service is top notch.

MPS — Firmin’s Best Decision Yet!
Firmin’s Office City is proof that being an old, well-established business doesn’t mean you’re not future-focused and tech-driven. Firmin’s is registered as a Historical Business and has received the Texas Treasure Business Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of Texas businesses that have provided employment opportunities and support to the state’s economy for at least 50 years. It is the oldest office products dealer in East Texas, founded in 1918 by Harry Firmin and his three sons, Treher, Jack and Charles.
In the 1940s, Charles returned from World War II and began working for Firmin’s in Texarkana, Jack opened a Firmin’s store in Mt. Pleasant and Treher opened his own company in Waco. Charles Firmin, Jr. began working for his dad in the 1950s and took over the company in the early ’70s.
In 1997, Charles “Chuck” Firmin, III became president of Firmin’s Office City, which currently operates out of Texarkana, Longview and Terrell locations, servicing East Texas, Southwest Arkansas, Southeast Oklahoma and Northwest Louisiana.
In the early 2000s, Chuck added the Office Machine Division and Firmin’s became the local Authorized Dealer for Kyocera and Konica Minolta. Three years later, he started their Managed Print Services (MPS) program and says this has been the best decision of his career so far.
The MPS team conducts an analysis of a customer’s fleet of copiers and printers and presents a thorough report of usage, equipment and cost per page. The goal is to help the customer control the equipment and manage it to an affordable cost of under two cents per printed page. For that two cents per page, Firmin’s covers parts, labor, travel time, toner and drum–everything but the paper.
“The exciting part for us is we have taken a lot of HP printers and put them under service. We are using Elite Image toners and generic drums/PM kits, and since doing this, we have been averaging 64% GP on HP printers. That is exciting to us,” explains Chuck, “and the program has also helped create machine sales!”
In these days of commoditized products and the apparent race to rock-bottom pricing, Chuck has created a niche in which Firmin’s can thrive by offering real value and cost savings to its customers.
Firmin’s Office City is excited to announce that on August 1st we consolidated our Carthage and Mt. Pleasant stores. After months of planning, we have chosen Longview as our newest store location. We are now strategically located between Carthage and Mt. Pleasant.
Our existing customers will have improved service and will speak to the same friendly staff! Shannon, Kathryn, Todd and Matt will continue to serve you as always.
We also look forward to the opportunity to serve a brand new group of customers in the Longview area!

In 2015, Firmin’s Office City acquired a new location in Terrell, Texas. This allows Firmin’s to expand services even further. Firmin’s now has the capability to services all of East Texas as well as the Eastern part of the Metoplex, including Rockwall.
So, on March 30th, after much preparation, we were able to have our official Ribbon Cutting and Grand Re-Opening of the Terrell location. With the help of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce, this event was a great success! Thank you to all who attended and helped us celebrate this occasion.

Joel McClellan has been a sales executive for more than 10 years, during which time he has amassed millions in sales for the organizations he has worked for. Recognized every year as a top achiever, Joel is known for his professional presentation, personable nature and helping his customers become more successful.
In addition to his professional achievements, Joel is active in his community, supporting local fundraising efforts, volunteer work and can be found on the field helping kids in youth sports.
Joel will be taking good care of customers in the areas of Texarkana, Atlanta, Linden, Jefferson, Marshall & Longview. So if you are in these areas you can look forward to a visit from Joel soon!
